First and foremost, I would like to thank Allah who has helped me throughout my time in the UK, made a number of academic achievements possible and allowed me to complete this PhD.

A very special heartfelt thanks go to my Mother (Jawharah Abdulaziz Banoonah) and Father (Saleh Suliman Madani) for their love and prayers during my time at De Montfort University.

I would also like to thank wholeheartedly my uncle, Abdurahman Banoonah, Ameen Banoonah and Professor Hashim Hariri who provided support throughout my life in the UK.

My deepest thanks to my four children Jawharah, Abdul Aziz, Laura and Rashid for their love, unflinching patience and understanding during my studies.

Finally, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Dr. Adam Moroz, without his constructive advice and encouragement this PhD would not have been possible. A heartfelt thanks for Dr. Emily Baines whose guidance, advice, time and inspiration were invaluable throughout the study. Moreover, special thanks for the support of Professor Bilal Makled who gave much of his valuable expertise and experience in the study area and facilitated the practical work. I cannot forget how grateful Professor David Wimpenny was at the start of my journey of this PhD before he left. To conclude I would like to thank the support staff at De Montfort University for their kind assistance.
